Today Tarot cards are used to provide a channel through which messages are received
from either to answer specific yes or no answers or to give an overall
feeling for a situation or period in time. A or is required in
order to give a useful Tarot card reading and this is something that can be developed
over time.
Here is a brief idea of what Tarot cards are and how they can be used -
Tarot cards consist of the Major and Minor Arcana (arcana meaning mystery). There are
22 picture cards in the Major Arcana and 56 cards in four suits in the Minor Arcana.
The Major Arcana cards with basic meanings are as follows -
- The Fool - a new optimistic start but also folly or extravagance
- The Magician - talents to be used, self reliance and confidence
- The High Priestess - using intuition and hidden things happening
- The Empress - comfortable home life, safety and security
- The Emperor - a father figure or boss, protection and support
- The Hierophant - tradition, marriage, growth and development
- The Lovers - partnerships, meetings and partings, love and affection
- The Chariot - work , travel and having too much to do
- Strength - inner strength or strength of position in circumstances
- The Hermit - reflection, meditation and sensible withdrawal from life
- Wheel of Fortune - change, a turning point
- Justice - fair play, balance and all legal matters
- The Hanged Man - a turning point in mental attitude, sacrifice or suspension
- Death - necessary change, death of the old self and endings
- Temperance - patience required or things at a standstill
- The Devil - a need to heal inner turmoil or bad influences in general
- The Tower - hidden truth or unpleasant events to leave clear understanding
- The Star - something to look forward to and a bright future
- The Moon - highly charged emotions, confusion or romantic problems
- The Sun - success, happiness and celebrations
- The Last Judgment - end of a long term situation or result of past decisions
- The World - end of a phase or a new environment
The Minor Arcana are in four suits in the same format as normal playing cards but with
one extra i.e. King, Queen, Knight and Page (the Knight relates to the Jack in a normal
pack of cards and the Page is usually used to signify a young person).
The suits are -
- Cups - emotions (water signs i.e. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces)
- Wands - actions (fire signs i.e. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius)
- Swords - mentality (air signs i.e. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius)
- Pentacles or Coins - money (earth signs i.e. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn)
Tarot cards are normally read using different layouts called spreads, the most common
being the Celtic Cross (see above - click to enlarge). A card chosen from the Minor
Arcana is used to signify the questioner which is placed first, face up. The questioner
should then shuffle the cards whilst asking their question (if they have one), cut the pack
onto three with their left hand and choose one of the piles to be used. The cards are
then placed face up by you, the reader. Card 1 is placed over top of the significator card
which is followed by the remaining cards, as shown. Each placement is given a different
meaning or influence, but this is only a guideline as the cards are a channel for symbolic
messages and not for literal meaning.
The Celtic Cross placements give an indication of the following -
- Your current situation
- Your hopes or problems
- Your conscious desires
- Your subconscious desires
- Your recent past
- Your near future
- Your influence
- The influence of those around you
- Your hopes and fears
- The outcome
As the cards are being placed you will get a feeling of what the reading is about. Try to
relax and focus on the question (if there is one) and what the cards are showing you. Say
whatever occurs to you whilst you are doing this because it doesn’t matter if it makes no
sense to you as the message is not for you. This is the most important thing to remember.
Reading Tarot cards involves channelling information. It can be helpful to focus on the
symbolism in the cards to visualise the meaning of the message. If you practice as much
as possible you will come to recognise what a good reading feels like and try to repeat
that feeling each time.
Mind, Body & Spirit - Tarot
Tarot cards are used as a channel for or and
provide symbolic representation of the messages received.
The history of Tarot cards is uncertain but they are thought to have
originated in Italy about 600 years ago. Around this time they were used
as playing cards for a game similar to Bridge and it was only centuries
later that they were given mystical meaning. This happened in England
and France where followers of the occult started to use them. By giving
mystical meanings to the symbols on the cards they were used as a tool
in divination.
